About the Event

ClimateWorks Foundation and the Buy Clean Alliance are delighted to invite you to this panel event, Buy Clean: How Governments and Companies can use procurement to close the carbon loophole, during the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) to hear from corporate leaders and government policy makers on their plans to Buy Clean.

Carbon emissions from the production of everything, from cement and steel to candy and cosmetics, is traded internationally, crossing many borders but yet not being accounted for in the countries where the goods and services are consumed. The 2017 Buy Clean California Act (AB 262) is the world’s first legislative effort to address imported carbon emissions at the state level, by aligning the state’s $10 billion annual spend on infrastructure with California’s leadership on climate. Other states and nations are discussing clean procurement as a pathway to reduce imported carbon, while many large international companies have already been demonstrating their commitment to explore ways to implement such measures in their own procurement policies.

How can government and corporate supply chain procurement policies allow organizations to align their buying with their climate ambitions while closing the carbon loophole and addressing the entirety of their carbon footprint?

Join us for this panel event to hear from corporate champions, government policy makers, and other leaders on their plans to Buy Clean.

If you have any questions, please contact buyclean@climateworks.org.

Keynote Speaker

A fifth-generation Washingtonian, Jay Inslee was elected to Congress in 1998, serving until 2012 when he was elected governor. He was re-elected in 2016.

During his time in Congress, Jay became known as a forward-thinking leader, especially on issues of clean energy and environment. He co-wrote a book, "Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean-Energy Economy," about a national program to fight climate change through clean energy innovation and job-creation.

As governor, Jay's top priority is growing Washington's innovative industries such as clean energy, information technology and life sciences, and strengthening existing industries such as aerospace, agriculture, maritime and the military. Since 2013, Washington has experienced a 30-year low in unemployment rates, record exports and has consistently ranked as one of the top states for business.

Governor Inslee will speak about the role of public procurement in buying clean, and how forward-thinking states can leverage their purchasing power.
